Independent engineering practice

The engineering behind the systems you run.

1722 Consulting is an independent engineering practice run by Steven Sharp. We do the hands-on engineering — software engineering and testing, hardware and electronics, server setup and deployment, and systems architecture — the deep work behind the systems businesses depend on.

What we do

Hands-on engineering, across five disciplines.

The deep, senior work behind the systems you run — software to silicon to servers, delivered directly by the engineer who scopes it.

  • 01

    Software engineering

The systems behind your operation — configuring, integrating and automating the platforms you run, plus embedded and control software.

    Software engineering
  • 02

    Software testing & QA

Test engineering and verification, automated and manual, so what ships behaves under real load — not just on the happy path.

    Software testing
  • 03

    Hardware & electronics

Circuit and PCB design, embedded firmware, power and battery systems, and OEM hardware integration — schematic to production.

    Electronics & embedded
  • 04

    Server setup & deployment

Enterprise servers and infrastructure — set up, deployed, configured and made resilient, not just advised on.

    Infrastructure
  • 05

    Systems architecture

How it all fits together — systems and infrastructure architecture, integration, and high-availability and disaster-recovery design.

How we work

The shape of an engagement.

A defined method with named artefacts at every stage.

  • 01

    Understand & scope

A short discovery call, then a written statement of work: the problem, the scope, the deliverables and how we will know it is done.

  • 02

    Design & engineer

The actual engineering — software, schematic and firmware, servers, architecture — done by the senior engineer, not passed down a chain.

  • 03

    Deliver, integrate & commission

Into your systems, your floor, your estate: tested, commissioned and proven against the acceptance criteria we agreed.

  • 04

    Handover & support

Documentation and training so your team can run it. We do not disappear at handover; follow-on support is available but never a lock-in.

How engagements and pricing work

Who we work with

Three kinds of buyer.

3PL & warehouse operators

You already own a WMS and automation, but the floor still fights slow picks, inaccurate counts and aging exceptions. We engineer the systems you own to perform.

Hardware & product R&D

You need senior electronics and embedded capability to de-risk a design, unblock a stuck project, or take a prototype toward production — with the IP staying yours.

Enterprise & infrastructure

You need servers and infrastructure engineered — set up, deployed and made resilient — and the systems architecture to back it.

The firm

Who you actually work with.

1722 is run by Steven Sharp, with around twenty years hands-on in software and systems. A boutique practice is a deliberate choice: you talk to the engineer making the decisions, and credibility rests on real experience, precise method and the deliverables you keep.

FAQ

Straight answers.

What does 1722 do?

1722 is an independent engineering practice. We do the hands-on work: software engineering and software testing, hardware and electronics design, server setup and deployment, and systems architecture — the deep engineering behind the systems businesses run. Every engagement is delivered directly by the principal, Steven Sharp, on around twenty years of hands-on experience.

Do you do software engineering and software testing?

Yes — both are core. Software and systems engineering means configuring, integrating and automating the platforms you run, plus embedded and control software. Software testing and QA — automated and manual — makes sure what ships behaves under real load, not just on the happy path.

Do you set up and deploy servers, or only advise?

Both. We architect enterprise infrastructure and we set it up, deploy and configure it — servers, environments and the resilience around them. What we do not do is day-to-day desktop or helpdesk support; this is engineering work, not an IT-support contract.

Who does the work?

The senior engineer does the work. Engagements are led and delivered directly by Steven Sharp — not handed to a junior team or outsourced. You get direct access to the person making the engineering decisions.

How do you charge?

By expertise and time — day-rate, time-and-materials, retainer, or a fixed-scope engineering package, each tied to a written statement of work with named deliverables and acceptance. Scope and price are set after a short discovery call.

Where are you based, and do you work with US companies?

We are based in Livingston, Scotland (1722 Consulting Ltd, registered in Scotland, No. SC876019). We work with UK and US clients — a priority market is US 3PL and warehouse operators — on-site or remote.

Do you sign NDAs, and who owns the intellectual property?

We sign a mutual NDA as standard. On commissioned work you own the output — the design files, schematics, firmware source, configuration and documentation we produce for you are yours. You commission the work, we deliver it, you own it.
